Has anyone made a DDR4 SODIMM that is smaller than 30mm? I can't find a solution that would work for me? Or perhaps a 90 degree adapter/extension that isn't taller than the slot?

A ways off, but DDR5 is also being considered to have a new physical layout. This might mean less tall or less wide standard DIMMs and SO-DIMMs.

Oh yes, these are slated to take atleast until 2018 at which we'll probably see it in enterprise first. Probably 2019 or 2020 for consumers, but it was just a side-note that I mentioned it.

Are there any more short term solutions?

Not that I know but they could just as well make VLP SO-DIMMs:

Although the clamping system prohibits going past 1/3rd of the size reduction. I would guess this system is what's being looked at for DDR5.

Yeah I've never understood why manufacturers decided to makes solely DIMMs that stood that far above the DIMM when they could use 1GB package memory stacks that would only take up about half of the PCB.

Cost, most likely. OEMs don't want to slim down when the cost isn't representative of the size reduction. But only one manufacturer has to be convinced there is a market for this. Crucial was that manufacturer in the DDR3 era.

Time to find a connection there.
