Rumor Intel Reportedly Readying Xeon Gold Processor Line

In what could be seen as a 'throw enough stuff at the wall and hope something sticks' reaction to AMD's Ryzen (which also may explain the i3-7350K), TechPowerup is reporting (based on a Canard PC tweet, which is known to be a reputable source) that Intel is readying a new line of processors aimed at creative professional workstations. The new Xeon Gold processors will be based on the Skylake-EP architecture, and seemingly is targeted at those who desire server 'reliability' in their workstations.

Competition on CPU market...that's pleasant to see...last time I witness that...it was FX vs core 2 duo?.:D

Isn't this just a rebranding of the existing E5-1xxx Xeon line for if you happen to put an -EP Xeon in a single-socket board?

No, this would be for LGA3647, or possibly for LGA2011-3 LGA2066 (like the Skylake-X line, previously known as Skylake-E). I'd guess LGA3647 just to avoid having to squeeze a large die onto a small package, and to expose the additional features that cannot fit into LGA2066 (e.g. Omni-Path interconnect).

I think Broadwell-E is the last architecture to come to LGA 2011-v3. Skylake-X will use the new LGA 2066 socket with the new X299 chipset.
As for these Gold Xeons, my money would be on LGA 3647 too, but I wouldn't be surprised if Intel introduces an entirely new socket in order to separate the product line from both HEDT and server lines.

Whoops, I forgot they were moving to R4.

Dumb question, but are 1S Xeon chips the same die as "normal" Core chips, just with ECC turned on?
The Xeon E3- series chips are. E5- and E7- series are different dies (i7 'extreme edition' chips share dies with some of the 'lower'-end E5-1xxx series).
