SFF.Network [SFF Network] Intel Manages to Get a 16 Core Xeon Under 45W.. With a Few Catches

Intel has launched their Xeon D-1571 SoC, a 16 core server and workstation class CPU that supports hyperthreading. This System on Chip SKU is based on the Broadwell architecture and Intel has managed to get it to run at 45w TDP! An amazing feat of engineering considering the CPU has 16 cores and HT, making 32 threads.

This is an embedded style SoC though, and will only be available on pricey, but sturdy, server and workstation boards from the likes of Supermicro (like the one pictured above) and Tyan.

Holy mother of virtual machines! Good for heavy networking or highly threaded, low-power applications.

I expect the uses of this would be limited to Linux - Windows doesn't cope well with uber threading

ServeTheHome has benchmarked the top model Xeon D-1587 and it's frustrating to see it kick the ass out of a dual 12-core/24-thread E5-2620 V3 CPUs. We have two 1U machines with dual E5-2620 V3 CPUs at work and it's frustrating to realise these 65W mITX boards just beat the crap out of them.

The D-1571 is about 25% lower theoretically but also has just a 45W TDP, but it's price is about $1,222, so boards I expect will be about $1,500 and up.
