Discussion How to connect audio socket to motherboard

I am wondering if I can connect a 3.5mm stereo socket straight to the motherboard (without any control board). If that it possible, how would I go about wiring it? The diagram for one such socket looks like this, while another model lacks the pin marked as ①.

The front audio header can be seen here. I am blindly guessing that pin #4 is unnecessary, and that if a mic socket is present, it would have to share pin #2 with the headphone socket. I am also guessing that #6 and #10 are optional, since the sockets have a limited number of pins.

Any input on this would be greatly appreciated.

You'll need to source a 3.5mm jack with an isolated switch, not the kind you've shown where the switched pin is connected to one of the audio signals (the ring, in your diagram, although versions connected to the tip are also available - at any rate, you want neither).

Thanks for the information. It seem unlikely that I can pull this off then. To bad the ready-made ones tend to share a board with other IO ports, which can be hard to fit in SFF.
