Streacom just announced their new case here. Bit dissapointed with it. The location of USB ports on the bottom will be a pain...and there looks to be so much wasted space on the inside. The distance between the cpu and the aluminum side panle is a wee bit excessive imo.

Ah didn't they show this at CES earlier? That Asus Avalon concept would solve a lot of problems with motherboard orientation, basically put it any way you want and shove the I/O component on the back or top somewhere.......or on your desk :)

Gigabyte have just recently announced their Alpine Ridge AIC!

http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=5906#ov

It allows Thunderbolt ready motherboards (including the Asrock X99 mATX boards in principle) to upgrade to the new protocol.
Asus have an AIC as well but it's nowhere near as elegant or fully featured IMO.

With single cable docks, external GPUs, 10Gb Ethernet, 100W charging capabilities and active optical cables over 60m there are a lot of potential applications for SFF.

Is it just me or has this year's Computex been kinda disappointing from a SFF perspective?

Edit: Some cool PSU announcements but no good cases or motherboards that I've seen.

Lots of SFX PSUs but almost no cases to use them - the few ITX cases look huge and many are just updates of stuff already shown or released.

Yeah, it's been pretty underwhelming this year. Very little to get excited about for me personally. I'm a bit disappointed Noctua seems to have abandoned the active noise cancelling tech they showed a few years back. Likewise, the air bearing Sandia cooler is nowhere to be found, which had the potential to be a boon for SFF.

AMD has been pushing AM4 motherboards to the right and the 200-series Intel boards won't be ready until later on this year.

I was really expecting more from AMD this year - it seems the reports from partners that AMD wasn't showing them much might have been a little bit true. Maybe they're leaving stuff on the table for E3?

That MSI Mortar Arctic board looked nice. Would be most welcome if they could give custom pcb color to a mini itx board as well. Been waiting a long time for more interesting themed mini itx boards, that never come... sigh.

Was NZXT a no-show at Computex? I can't find much on them. Seems Fractal Design didn't have anything new to show :(

I genuinely think that the RX 480 has the potential to be an incredibly, incredibly aggressive move on AMD's part. I was not expecting the level of performance they're conveying at the $200 price point. And although they were very selective/cherry-picked real-world stats, it's not inconceivable that the card could have performance at or above the 980. At $200!

But what if Nvidia releases a GTX 1060 or 1060 ti at $249 during E3, and it outperforms the 480 by 10%? I realize that it's more expensive but a lot of people don't trust AMD driver support, and would be willing to spend the extra money for better software support.

I am using a GTX 660 over an R9 370 because I kept running into issues with AMD's driver support - Forza Apex wouldn't even launch with an AMD card, and every time I want to update drivers I need to totally reinstall AMD Crimson software.

I really want to support AMD more but often it can be frustrating dealing with software that seems it's 10 years old.

That ROG G31 looks ridiculous. At 20L there's no reason to have any external PSU.

But on the other hand, even if it isn't smaller, the Avalon looks more interesting. A nice take on the shoebox design. It feels more at home with a hi-fi HTPC setup.

Its draw seems to be a cable-free approach to putting a PC together. Look at this riser craziness

I think Fractal had some casemods in the Nano S, but that's about it.

I was also pretty disappointed with the lack of SFF this year, even if it make sense.
:/
Hopefully we'll see some ITX 1070s by the end of the year or something?
Not holding my breath for them though.

the OLA i'm not so impressed with now. It looks quite a bit bigger than the DeepCool Pentower that was shown last year at CES.

This Lian Li ITX case looks pretty awesome.

I don't see much room for cooling except the top exhaust. I hope they can add the option for front mounted intake fans. I really want this case.

Lian Li's PC-O10 ATX chassis also caught my eye.
It only supports SFX(-L) presumably to demonstrate their new power supplies.

As others have said, Computex was a bit of a disappointment for me too as far as SFF is concerned.

I'm fairly impressed with this year's Computex. Not many SFF cases, but a lot of products people have been wanting like the Noctua products (slim 120mm, Chromax, other size fans), Cryorig's unique designs, Silverstone's 800W 80+ Titanium SFX-L PSU, Lian-Li's focus (finally) on SFX PSUs, AMD's RX 480 with short PCB + low TDP and so many more.

Maybe not so many SFF products or cases, but a lot of ideas and potential. Let's not forget not long ago we didn't even have SFX-L, more than 450W or low noise SFX PSUs and now we have two >700W PSUs with much more to come. I don't mind seeing just a few SFF cases, the best ones are coming from talented designers on forums like these anyway.

But what if Nvidia releases a GTX 1060 or 1060 ti at $249 during E3, and it outperforms the 480 by 10%?

Would NVIDIA do that if there wasn't a RX 480? If they didn't feel that AMD was being aggressive?

Look, even if we just accept that all of the refrains you mentioned are true for everyone (which isn't even remotely the case, but just for the sake of argument let's go with it), the RX 480 remains a really big deal, even for folks who would never buy an AMD card.

When Pascal and the 1080/1070 came out, I did a quick analysis of the perf-per-dollar in raw compute terms to demonstrate the value the newer parts were delivering. These were the figures I calculated at the time (and are basically the same now), in order from least to most value. Note that I was comparing the perf-per-dollar of NVIDIA's Maxwell and Pascal options in current-day terms (so, with current-day prices that reflect how cheaply you can get Maxwell now):

980 SLI: 8298 GFLOPS / $880 = 9.42
980: 4610 GFLOPS / $440 = 10.47
980 Ti: 5630 GFLOPS / $530 = 10.62
1080: 8900 GFLOPS / $599 = 14.85

I think any reasonable person would agree that a ~40% improvement in perf-per-dollar between generations is pretty great, right? People were excited for this hardware, and I felt that they had good reason to be. And again, this is comparing current-day prices for hardware, not launch prices, so this is giving the old hardware the best possible chance to shine. Yet, the 1080 is such a big improvement that it's actually the value buy right now, for folks that can budget for it. That's pretty awesome.

So remember that figure: 40%. Now, let me add both the GTX 1070 and the RX 480.

Look at what happens:

980 SLI: 8298 GFLOPS / $880 = 9.42
980: 4610 GFLOPS / $440 = 10.47
980 Ti: 5630 GFLOPS / $530 = 10.62
1080: 8900 GFLOPS / $599 = 14.85
1070: 6500 GFLOPS / $379 = 17.15
RX 480: 5000 GFLOPS / $199 = 25.12

Not only does the RX 480 deliver over 46% more perf-per-dollar than the GTX 1070 - it delivers nearly 70% more perf-per-dollar than the GTX 1080. 70%! Are you kidding me?

NVIDIA could only reach 40% against their own, over-one-year-old hardware, and AMD is absolutely crushing their just-released (and not-even-released) hardware right out of the gate. They beat down NVIDIA's 1070 in perf-per-dollar, and you'll basically have $379 MSRP versions of that card available at the same time as the RX 480.

And by the way, this assumes that AMD's ">5 TFLOPS" figure means "5.0001", so I'm not even giving them a fair shake right now. I think it's a wash since past testing has found that TFLOPS on AMD cards don't correlate as strongly with gaming performance when compared to NVIDIA (mostly due to some architectural differences), but still.

Frankly, anyone who looks at that and isn't floored is crazy. Anyone who thinks that isn't going to affect how NVIDIA prices their hardware is crazy. This is almost certainly a move by AMD to accept razor-thin margins, in exchange for massively boosting their market share as quickly as possible. And for NVIDIA customers, that means two things - either better prices, or better competition. Either way, everyone wins.
