The folks at Lazer 3D were nice enough to take a look at my Maker Beam proof of concept posting here on SFF.net and advised they would be willing to develop a larger variation of their LZX-8 case using my suggested component configuration: Air cooled case with separate air intake & exhaust for CPU-motherboard / space for small 1 or 2 fan GPU without riser cable / PSU mounted on its side with own air side intake & rear exhaust with no internal power cable; flow through front to back case air flow; space for mid sized CPU cooler. The case is about the same dimensions as the LZ7 XTD with all the components shifted 90 degrees - except it is 2mm taller - this allows the Thermalright Silver Soul 135 cooler to JUST fit. Some variations are possible such as an interchangeable panel behind the front panel that allows either 1 - 140mm or 120mm fan with a 205mm length GPU & full front (side) IO panel, or 2 - 120mm fans (when using an ITX length GPU & vandal power switch only; or a different panel for SSD's. I will be posting testing results of various configurations in this case shortly.
Here are some initial photos:

Here are some additional photos:

Ignore the cheap vandal switch. This was already installed on this motherboard. Lazer 3D includes a nice all metal switch.

Thanks for sharing your build and testing, the pics looks great too. How was the build process, did you have any difficulties putting it together? (Mark was sent a prototype).

It's great to see that adding the rear fan reduces the CPU by around 11C - 12C, I wonder if it will have as much of an impact when using a top down style cooler?

Here are a few more pics of the case we've since taken for anyone interested:

No problems assembling the case. Using a short fan extension cable to the CPU fan header on the Aorus MB allowed me to easily swap out the CPU cooler fan as this header is not accessible once the PSU is installed. The 140mm case fan has significant noise at higher RPM. The front panel slots do not extend high or low enough to allow the 140mm fan to draw air smoothly. Even the 120mm front case fan(s) are a bit louder than I would like at higher RPM. The Phanteks T30 fits perfectly as a single front case fan - I only have one of these. I think I would need custom shorter/more flexible PSU cables to try to fit two of these in the case. I am also awaiting a 202mm length GPU that should arrive tomorrow and will add additional photos. I will be trying a downdraft cooler shortly. For fitment of the Silver Soul 135 cooler - the top panel does not touch the CPU fan when using the stock fan, or the Arctic P12, for the Scythe Wonder Snail and Scythe Kaze Flex Black the top panel touches the anti-vibration pads but can be screwed down with slight pressure. For the Noctua A12x25 the upper anti vibration pads must be removed and the the top panel does not touch the fan or cooler. It was nice to see from the testing how well the front to back cooling works with the GPU slot only nearly solid top panel.

I switched from my testing setup to my daily work setup. Same MB and RAM on both but this unit has a Ryzen 7 5700G instead of a 4750G Pro using a Noctua D9L CPU cooler. Although the wattage is lower on the 5700G, the chip runs several degrees hotter than the 4750G (noted in earlier testing). This unit also has a bottom NVMe drive so temps for this were added. Also received my Evga 3060Ti XC today - pictures added. With front to back air flow with a tower style cooler the GPU slot only top panel does as well as the fully vented panel. The 2 90mm fans on the Evga 360Ti run quieter than the single 100mm fan on the PNY 3060.

Thanks for the updated testing, interesting to see that the rear case fan does not make as much difference when used with a top down cooler compared to a tower style.

It also seems that the new Thermalright Silver Soul 130 is the best performing cooler tested so far.

Yes, I will go ahead and fit the Silver Soul 135 to my work setup replacing the Noctua D9L and test as well.

This looks really cool! The layout isn't really my jam, but I still see the appeal. Definitely a good layout if you want a standard PSU and plenty of CPU cooling :)

Awesome! Looks a lot like my first scratch built case:

The GPU ran HOT. Probably due to not having the proper venting at the top.

Thanks for sharing. Good looking case!

Further LZX-10 Front Case Fan Testing

CPU-Z Stress Test & Unigine Valley Ultra Settings for 10 minutes

Thermalright Silver Soul 135
CPU & Case Fans PWM 100% except 3rd Phanteks front fan test @ 50% PWM

Noctua NT-H1 Thermal Paste
Room Temp 21C;
Temp Sensor TZ10 read 16.8C on all test runs;

After noting the excessive noise when using the Arctic P14 front case fan at higher speeds, I decided to try various 120mm front fans in the Lazer 3D LZX-10 case to see if the noise could be reduced. With the 202mm length graphics card installed only one front 140 or 120mm fan can be mounted in the case. Part of the noise with the 140mm fan is apparently caused by having 10 cooling slots on the front panel that do not extend high or low enough and block a significant portion of the top and bottom of the fan’s intake creating additional noise.

Fans were tested with both the fully vented top panel and the CPU only vented top panel.

The front interior mounting panel bows out when only a single fan is installed touching the back of the exterior front panel. I believe this interior panel is being pushed forward by the thick 24 pin power cable. To stop this, I attached anti-vibration pads (or smaller pieces of the pads) from a Noctua A12x15 Cromax fan to the interior front panel to straighten the panel. I did not notice this panel bowing when two fans were installed on the interior panel when using a shorter GPU that allowed the installation of two front 120mm case fans.

The Aorus B550 motherboard has a high CPU location (so described when mounted on a vertical motherboard). This offsets the CPU cooler closer towards the PSU and the front 120mm case fan is not completely in front of the entire Silver Soul 135 cooler. Motherboards with a more centrally located PSU might allow for slightly greater cooling of the CPU with the Silver Soul cooler. With a 140mm fan the entire cooler has direct airflow coverage.

Summary of observations of front fans tested:
Arctic P14 – Had already noted noise at higher fan speeds.
Arctic P12 – Notably quieter than the P14 at all speeds. Gradual noise increase until 90% PWM 1720 RPM when an additional resonance was noted that continued to 100% PWM.
Phanteks T30 – Fits without issue – tested at 100% PWM in performance mode & 50% PWM in advance mode. Quieter than the 140mm fan above 1400 RPM.
Noctua A12x25 – Components run slightly cooler than the Arctic P12 at about the same noise level.
Scythe Kaze Flex Black – I can see why the original version of this fan was limited to 1200 RPM – above that the fan is noisily pushing air all through the case. It cools the bottom NVMe drive better than all the other fans. Also notice the counter-rotating Scythe fan slows the CPU cooler fan noticeably.
Scythe Wonder Snail* - Testing at 100% PWM was excessively loud in this installation. Test stopped – do not use as front case fan with the LZX-10. At 75% PWM1935 RPM there was a howl despite the lower overall sound level when using this fan in this case. Wonder Snail works fine as CPU cooler fan, but not at all as case fan in this installation.

My suggestion is to use a 120mm front fan to minimize noise with the standard 10 slot front panel if you intend to allow the installed fan to exceed 1500 RPM. You will further note the very slight temperature increase when using the GPU only vented top panel versus the fully vented top panel.

LZX-10 Alternate Front Panel with 140mm Arctic P14 Front Case Fan Testing

I finally installed the I/O panel for extra front/side ports. This is very well thought out as the connectors are on a separate circuit board with individual plug in cables. You need only connect what you intend to use. Only one USB 3 header and cable is required for 2 USB type A and one USB type C ports to be active. This is a perfect arrangement for the Aorus B550 motherboard that has only a single USB 3 header.

I obtained two additional front panels: one with 14 slots instead of the standard 10 slots, and one with a cyclone vent. In my initial testing I noted a whine when the front intake case fan was used at higher RPM - in particular with a 140mm fan. This was reduced somewhat when an Arctic P12 fan was substituted. You will note below that there is little temperature difference between any of the panels when using a 140mm fan. I thought there would be larger temperature and noise differences between the slotted panels. As to noise, I have no db meter, but both the 10 slot and 14 slot panels both have a whine that begins above 1190 RPM / 66% PWM with the P14 fan, that continues to increase up to maximum RPM. I noted no real noise difference between the 10 slot and 14 slot panels. However I did notice the whine was more distinct with both slotted panels when the nearly solid GPU vent only top panel was installed instead of the fully vented top panel. The cyclone front panel has no whine, but a lower pitched hum at higher RPM above 1190 RPM. The cyclone vented front panel also seemed to produce a bit more noise with the GPU vent only top panel. I estimate that when the fully vented top panel is installed, the front fan can run 10% faster to reach the same noise level as the GPU vent only top panel.

If you like the fully vented look, the 14 slot front panel matches vey nicely with the fully vented top panel.
The cyclone vent looks OK to me but I find the front panel a bit bare with just that vent. I would add 10 short slots on either side of the cyclone vent to match the slots on the other panels if I was to order this again.

As to reducing front intake fan noise at higher RPM, a solution might be to mount the front fan with 5mm spacers to inset the fan further inside the case, as there is enough depth to install a 30mm thick Phanteks T30. Anyone know where I can obtain 5mm longer self tapping screws and spacers?

Thanks for pulling together all this testing, it will surely help with future development and decisions going forward.

I am very confident that the fan noise is being produced due to the close proximity (sub 5mm) of the fan blades to the vent slots. The Cyclone Vent pattern is designed to reduce this air turbulence noise, but as you say it does not completely eliminate it. The closest you can get to zero fan turbulence when a fan is mounted directly to a panel is using an "Open Vent" style (complete round hole cutout) and mounting a Metal Fan Guard which has very thin wire grills. Alternatively very fine mesh grills or dust filters also provide quiet operation when fans are used as intakes and mounted onto a case panel.

Other than that you can try reversing the Front mounted fans to be set as exhaust fans rather than intake fans, this should also in theory eliminate most of the fan turbulence noise, but how it will affect the case thermals is the question. Creating a negative pressure will likely help with GPU temps as it will assist the GPU fans to pull fresh cool into the case, but you may see slightly higher CPU temps, this was the conclusion when reversing the fan in the original LZ7 which has a similar airflow design.

Regarding your suggestion to increase the gap of the fan to the front panel with spacers, this will certainly help to reduce some of the fan turbulence noise, although not completely as from my testing you require around a 20mm gap for fan turbulence noise to be eliminated. Technically the extra 5mm gap could be done through layering up some panels onto the front fan mount bracket, but this would add cost to the design.

If it helps, I found that for my LZX-8 with hex hole patterns for the front fan intake, when mounting a NF-A15 HS-PWM causes less turburlence compared to an Artic P14. Come to think about it, previously when using Thermalright's fans instead, the TL-D14S (140mm fan with 120mm mounting holes) compared to the TL-C14S (standard 140mm fan), the D14S has less fan turburlence as well.

What I have found, for a different case (with a similar layout), using the following nut and bolt to use as a spacer does eliminate most of the turburlence, but your mileage will vary I reckon, as the panel thickness might make a difference.

Thank you very much for the additional information regarding the spacers. I am also just about to try out a Thermalright TL-C14X 140mm Fan - it seems to be a bit more of an airflow design than the Arctic P14.

I reversed the airflow from the tower cooler setup to rear intake front exhaust. It was apparent from some earlier testing that the hot air builds up below the CPU cooler and requires one or two case fans to remove the hot air from the case.
I used the included cooler 120x15mm Thermalright fan as 25mm front case fan (when installed) with the fan blades facing the interior of the case were fouling against the thick EVGA 24 pin motherboard connector cable for my initial testing in this configuration. I think a custom flat 24 pin cable would eliminate this issue.
I reduced the rear intake fan to 50%PWM for a reasonable noise level.
After some additional experimentation instead of using the fixed mounting points on the interior mounting panel I was able to mount a 140mm Arctic P14 fan on the slots all the way to the left side of the front of the case to clear the motherboard cable. The included pictures are shown with the smoked CPU cooler vent only top panel and the Arctic P14 fan installed. I will test these configurations shortly.
