I'm looking for a CPU upgrade for my lapdesk / custom portable PC to maximise AM4. I was looking for a deal on 5700x, but found lately that 5800x has an ECO mode and 5800x3D can be set to 87W PTT and still maintain a lot of performance. My use on this PC is pretty much gaming and VR.

Where I live, 5700x is around £240, 5800x is around £280 and 5800x3D is a whopping £430

I have a custom-ish cooler that handles 65W CPUs without any issues (Dynatron A18 copper block + Noctua NF-A9-14 fan) so I think all of those options would work, could anyone post their experiences and recommendation? Or maybe something else, like 5900x ECO / 87W PTT?

Dug some more, can't really find a lot of info on those setups.

Found a few TimeSpy comparisons of non-eco 5800x and 5700x and the first is around 16% faster. That's TimeSpy, though, for benchmarks in games the difference is only around 2%.
Doesn't look like there's any point in 5800x ECO over 5700x.

That makes it 5700x vs 5800x3D... but also £240 vs £430. Might be better off with 5700x and a good NVMe drive for when direct storage gets better support
