What's the consensus on vertical orientation for the S4 mini? I would assume the vents and aluminum bezel should be on top for heat dissipation, but I searched everywhere and didn't find an answer to this.
Sorry in advance for my poor search skills! :/
I bought 2 Dell 330w bricks on Amazon for about half the price of those on the Dell website. They consistently failed with my I7 7700 + GTX 1080 combo. They should have been able to power this fine, as that combo was pulling <300W from the wall. They did work with a GTX 1070, but I've since...
The HDPLEX 400w DC jack is directly compatible with the Dell 330W brick. However, I can't speak to whether it could power that combo. I think the 1080Ti pulls almost 300w so you could be pretty close to the limit. Not sure how much undervolting would reduce the total draw...
Good luck!
You're spot on - seems I got a bad Dell brick from Amazon. Tested the system with a power meter and it's drawing ~240w max with the GTX 1070. Even with the 1080 it shouldn't have been more than ~300w, which has been confirmed by others.
It seems some of the Dell bricks either aren't legit, or...
Seems I might have a bad Dell 330w power supply. The bad one seemed to crash at around ~240w load. I swapped that brick out for an identical one (also from Amazon) and it seems to be more stable, at least up to a modest overclock. Unfortunately, I had already swapped out the GTX 1080 for a 1070...

Thanks, it's a 330w brick purchased on Amazon and seems legit, but who knows. I'm picking up a power meter today or tomorrow and will test the total draw.
I've also now tested it with a MSI 1070 mini - It makes it through the Heaven benchmark, but still crashes during games at high settings...
I can't for the life of me get the Zotac 1080 mini + Intel 7700 working unless I underclock the 1080 as far as possible in Afterburner. This is with the HDPLEX 400 and Dell 330w brick. It just crashes whenever I start Heaven or a game.
I'm picking up a power meter today or tomorrow to see if I...
I was able to stop the crashing by turning off Turbo boost (now running at max 3.6Ghz) and lowering the GPU clock speeds to their lowest settings. As soon as I start bumping up the GPU clocks, it crashes immediately during Heaven 4.0. Temps never get over 50C for the CPU and 65C for the GPU...
I do have a spare PSU and will give it a try. I also had a power meter but I can't seem to find it, so that may take a day or two to test. I guess if the spare PSU runs okay, it's only a question of whether I'm drawing too much power (likely), or I have a bad power supply.
Thanks for the response. The symptoms do point to a power shortage, but I had thought the 7700K at 4.2ghz + GTX 1080 was benchmarked at around 270w under full load. Here's the review from Josh at NFC with the same setup running at ~240w.
I must be confused, or maybe it's the turbo throwing...
I just finished an S4 Mini build with the HDPLEX 400 - both very cool pieces of hardware. Unfortunately, I'm having a problem and hoping someone can provide some pointers.
Everything runs fine until I start a benchmark (Heaven 4.0) or a game, even at medium/low settings. Then it immediately...
You might try reseating your RAM, and maybe starting with a single stick. May need to clear your CMOS too. It doesn't really sound like a RAM issue, but you never know. I've had some strange problems due to RAM.
Good luck!
