Hey Folks,

We're looking at doing more video production this year (spoiler!), and an important part of that is audio. With certain events around the corner, I've been looking at audio solutions for this - be it lav mics or camera mounted ones.

My videos so far on our YouTube channel have been recorded with my Canon 60D camera (which awkwardly doesn't have AF when filming.. but it's what I have), and a Blue Yeti mic hooked to my computer or laptop. The sources are then blended in post - video from the camera, audio from the mic.

With noisy environments at events, I am more looking at lav mics, to keep the mic closer to the source - my mouth, and to keep my hands free for talking (I gesture like a mofo when talking). So here's the question - what would you recommend? Keep in mind that budget is important - it's our subscribers that are funding this foray into the video world, so we have to keep the price down to keep the people happy!

second the RØDE Smartlav stuff, but you have to check pinout before location use. IIRC they're wired for iPhones/iPads, so if you need an adapter direct to the camera they also have the SC3.

otherwise price would be a fairly reasonable indicator of quality IMO. but if you're going big (the more expensive end) then you need to have a few arguments with some sound professionals.

how are you recording the audio again? straight to camera or into a separate audio recorder?

I heard a lot of complaints with the smartlav. I went with the Sony ecm-cs3 and it does a pretty good job. I'll be bringing it to Computex:)
