I bought a HDPlex 500w GaN PSU for my new SFF build. Works great when the computer is switch on and I am working on it. As soon as I put the computer into sleep mode or switch it off altogether I get coil whine. I messaged HDPLEX about this and they sent me a (used) replacement - hear the same coil whine under the same conditions.

Is this normal for this type of PSU? It is not very loud, like an annoying mosquito

Didnt have any issues like this so far, but its just my first HDPlex GaN, too.

Coil whine supposedly can be dependent on a lot of factors, eg. the computer hardware itself, or your local power grid. On that topic: Do you use power "normalization", eg. an UPS or any other kind of overvoltage protection? That helps a lot.

Also, there is your location: I'm in Germany, so the local power grid is 230V, while other countries may differ.

As we know eg. from Cybenetics tests, the 110 and 230 V loads tend to lead to different outcomes, ie. most power supplies seem to work more efficient and reliable between 220 - 240 V. With 110V, the efficiency seems to commonly lower by one level, eg. from Platinum to Gold.

so .. have you tried changing your hardware? Or tested your current build with a classic SFX or ATX PSU yet? Also, the above mentioned options, if not yet implemented, may help fixing the issue.

Hi thanks for replying

I am in the UK so somewhere between 220 - 240v

I am using a Enhance 8345L 450W Flex ATX PSU and it is super silent at all times

All HW is brand new - built a SFF PC with Gigabyte 650I AX, Ryzen 5 8600G, 2x16 GB Crucial DDR5 5200MhZ DIMMS and a Crucial 1TB NVMe SSD (Pcie 4)

I can test the HDPlex PSS with my NAS box and see if it has the coil whine. It is not loud by any stretch of the imagination but my other machines are totally silent

Cannot edit - meant to say I am not using a UPS or other kind of overvoltage protection - actually it is on a power-strip which has other things plugged in and claims to have "surge protection" - can try into a wall socket directly also
