Welcome to the forum ! SFF builds can indeed be expensive, although the reason I switched was because large cases require a lot of expensive hardware to be filled up as well. Though that was when I was buying cases well over 80L in volume... With Cooler Master's recent NC200 an SFF case can be assembled cheaply, when you consider air cooling and brands that have a more sensible price/performance ratio like Scythe and ASRock.
