Nice, sounds like an option. Not sure about the cost, though, in my case it was 17'' 1080p 144Hz and a cheap portable monitor was the same price as a laptop screen + controller board + DIY power cable
Who would want simple things? :D Sounds like an awesome thread. I built something similar - https://smallformfactor.net/forum/threads/diy-laptop-portable-pc-5-4-litres-17-screen.15795/
Have a look at the screen on the parts lists - not too expensive and works great, only drawback are rubbish...
Guess all depends on what you do, a PC won't match top performing gaming laptops without a dedicated GPU.
I travelled with my "lapdesk"/portable PC and it's great. Fits into a larger 17'' laptop bag. No external PSU means only a kettle lead, keyboard and mouse/trackball to take. Really shines...
Cool idea, can't believe I didn't think of it when designing my "lapdesk"/portable PC. You could buy 2 aluminium sheets, 2 or 3 hinges like I did for my project and just put them together for a lapboard with a portable screen on hinges (17'' 144Hz are still quite affordable).
Basically the 2...
@aromachi , if it's a tower / all-in-one build, why 15.6''? Feels really small to sit on the desk anyway. My lapdesk is about portability and I already feel 17.3'' is a minimum, something larger would have been better.
If I were building a static setup, I would take the same hardware as for my...
Nice, glad to spread the bug ;)
Yes. Some may work with just one USB-C (video and power) - I have another Porpoise 15.6'' 1080p 60Hz monitor and can connect it with just one USB-C cable off of a Thunderbolt port.
My 17'' has a USB-A to USB-C for power and HDMI to USB-C. The cables from 3rd...
I have Porpoise 17.3'' 144Hz and it's great, it also has VESA mounts, but it doesn't look like they do anything else than 17.3'' in 144Hz https://www.aliexpress.com/store/group/144Hz-Portable-Monitor/2881296_515120131.html?spm=a2g0o.detail.100008.2.744a3049QJH8jl
Portable USB-C monitor sounds...
Nice! Sounds like one of my earlier designs from this post where hardware box was behind the monitor. Didn't work for me - the hardware box was heavier than the bottom box and when not on a flat surface it made the whole design flip back. Should work well for you, though, if you mount the...
Dug some more, can't really find a lot of info on those setups.
Found a few TimeSpy comparisons of non-eco 5800x and 5700x and the first is around 16% faster. That's TimeSpy, though, for benchmarks in games the difference is only around 2%.
Doesn't look like there's any point in 5800x ECO over...
I'm looking for a CPU upgrade for my lapdesk / custom portable PC to maximise AM4. I was looking for a deal on 5700x, but found lately that 5800x has an ECO mode and 5800x3D can be set to 87W PTT and still maintain a lot of performance. My use on this PC is pretty much gaming and VR.
Where I...
Two... hundred... and ninety... holes... Don't have proper tools so drilled by hand with 6mm drill bit, then rounded the edges with 8mm bit.
Longer cables finally came - bluetack and original antennae above the monitor, 50cm pigtail cables behind the monitor, slack to attach to the network card...
Long time. I updated parts list and I'm actually using the new design, works like a charm. Just waiting for WiFi antennae cables and need to take some decent photos for final updates.
I started with blunting new aluminium plates' edges - they are really sharp! Hammer and tapping along each...
No problem. That's what I meant - you can send a message to ADT-Link on aliexpress and they can make you a custom cable (custom length and connector orientation if possible). The white ones are the flexible cables if I remember correctly. Delivery time may be long, though
great project, thanks for detailed posts! can't wait to see the final product and potentially steal the 3D printed case idea for my lapdesk 😁
My go-to is ADT-Link, they have some listings on aliexpress...
may be a daft question, but does setting fans "inside" the fins impact performance a lot for reduced height, e.g. like in Gelid Slim Silence?
I was surprised with my Gelid's performance. Could a heatsink with taller fins, but two fans set "inside" perform better, be quieter, lower and be...
