Could someone please clarify the following. As far as I understand 12vhpwr is being replaced by 12V2x6 in the near future. Does this make buying the current generation of 850R a pointless thing, or will the connector only change on the GPU side?

Let's don't forget about thickness of thermal pad between ssd and radator (about 1mm). So roughly said the radiator must be 1mm too
