The motherboard's spine should sit directly on top (contacting) the PSU. I'm unsure whether the overlapping 1mm will actually cause some bending/warping once the PSU is installed. In any case the images are super helpful!

In case anyone is interested, I fixed it by removing the unused m.2 screw in the back of the motherboard and adding two small washers between the riser pcb and the motherboard structure. No need to remove the backplate.
