If I could get get something like that with a Thunderbolt 3 connector instead, I would definitely buy it. I do not really want to take apart my laptop to force in that mini-pcie connector.

Yeah, it seems like most of them have GPU slots I will not need. Maybe the motherboard tray from that thread could work. I guess I could always print that too, but I am worried about how the plastic will hold up if I am traveling with it.

Is it possible to buy just the motherboard tray? If so how much would that be?

Probably more like the top one. Its going to have the GPU on the back like the A4. Where do you order something like that? I'm trying to keep it within 220 x 180 x 140 mm^3 roughly.

I was wondering if there were any minimal steel or aluminum plates/frames that would be a good starting point to build a case around. I'm planning to 3D print everything else. I really just need something to make sure the motherboard is secure, so I am guessing a single plate might be enough...

This might not appeal to everyone, but I would be interested in a minimalist, enclosure free eGPU that just consists of a base with a slot to plug in and stabilize the GPU. Ideally it would be powered by a 12V power brick. A nice looking GPU with a back plate could really stand on its own next...

@Necere I get what you are saying, that would change the aesthetics of the design. It does seem like a very good looking travel system at the moment.

@Necere The aesthetics of the case look very nice, but what if you flipped the PSU by 90 degrees so the case was shorter? The mobo + thickness of the PSU would be 170mm + 40mm or about 210 mm long, which is about the length of the mini 1080Ti, so you could make the case even smaller at the cost...

Good input, I haven't considered PET so I will look into that. I have PLA ordered for testing. The higher strength materials seem more expensive. I am worried about ABS fumes because I won't be able to install a permanent vent in my garage. Polycarbonate seems like it might be the strongest one...
