ASRock Micro-STX updates (GTX 1080 is working!)

When ASRock unveiled the DeskMini GTX back at CES they only supported up to the MXM GTX 1060, and when Drew talked with them power delivery concerns were the main holdup for supporting anything higher. But those crazy guys at ASRock have managed to get not only the GTX 1070, but even all the way to the GTX 1080 MXM cards working in there! Even cooler, it does so while providing all the power through the MXM slot, without relying on some kind of clunky power cable setup. Under load, we were told the GTX 1080 will level off at around the low …

We’ll cover it in more depth tomorrow, but we made a quick stop by the ASRock booth in between meetings today and snapped some pictures of the newly announced X299E-ITX/ac motherboard. ASUS ROG STRIX H270I motherboard coming soon

ASUS Republic of Gamers (ROG) brand is back with the all new ROG STRIX H270I. Similar to their current Z270 ITX offering (STRIX Z270I), this board offers many of the same features, save for its advanced overclocking capabilities. Interesting to note here is that ASUS has chosen to drop the mixed USB 2.0/3.0 ports from the Z270 model in favor of all USB 3.0 ports (6 at back panel, 2 at mid-board, giving this board 2 more USB 3.0 ports over the STRIX Z270i). ASUS has also chosen to add a second ethernet port. While the main ethernet port still uses the highly coveted Intel® I219V, …

MSI Unveils the B350M Mortar Arctic

As the Ryzen launch rolls on, we are finally starting to see some real options – in other words, non-ATX motherboards! MSI has unveiled their B350M Mortar Arctic board, a unit we previewed around CES in January. This board, in it’s all-white styling, really stood out to us – it’s a very bold statement in a sea of darker units.  Featuring the slightly gimped (versus the X370 platform) chipset, this unit is high in the midrange, in effect. The rear IO features a PS/2 port, two USB 2.0 ports, three USB 3.0 ports, a single USB Type C port, DVI, HDMI, …
