It makes sense to me. There's only limited competition from AMD for GTX 10-series, so there's no need to introduce a GTX 11-series when the GTX 1080Ti is still top dog and the sales are staying strong. Now they can keep focusing Volta silicon on enterprise and embedded, which will no doubt allow much better margins. That way Ampere will be H2 2018's lineup when hopefully AMD has more than just an answer to the current Nvidia lineup.
