I just learned about this new 12x12cm board from UP:
https://up-board.org/up-xtreme/
It comes with soldered CPU and RAM and will be available with i3/i5/i7 Whiskylake CPUs.

Yes, like Apple's soldered stuff it does grate.
Maybe industrial users don't care about the expandability, just reliability.
I see why it's called Extreme though. Input voltage 12 to 65V! I thought my Gigabyte H110TN was good with a 12-19V input range, looks a bit inadequate now TBH :p

Pretty sure calling this a "NUC competitor" is a bit of a mistake. 40-pin GPIO hat header? Dual STM32 microcontroller I/O headers? Lockable power connector? Proprietary docking connector? This is clearly an embedded board for industrial purposes, and I'd be surprised if it wasn't priced to match. Neat if you need your PC to be capable of automation or other unusual operations, I guess, but other than that is must be terribly expensive for what you get.
