As part of a multi-part series, I will be discussing the brave new(ish) world of DC-DC power supplies, their advantages, disadvantages and the technology that powers the smallest of our systems. In the first article, I explain what DC-DC is, why it is a useful product, and run down a few of the more popular brands on the market.

It reminds me that I have an Atom system that has a DC-DC board, from Shuttle, somewhere. I should look up what wattages that thing is. Although it's not particularly pretty or good, it has a thick black glossy paint on it that could look amazing with some buffing. And an mITX board with some horsepower.

am really glad you are doing this series - i took a quick look at the stuff and then thought 'i will come back to this to figure out what i need at some point' i like the idea of the pico psu a lot but then the power for the gpu comes into question - like what do i need for that. Am looking forward to hopefully having all this answered.

You said you couldn't find when the PicoPSU was launched? The Wide Input version http://resources.mini-box.com/online/PWR-PICOPSU-120-WI-25V/PWR-PICOPSU-120-WI-25V-changes.txt - 02/01/2005 Initial release. The trademark https://trademarks.justia.com/776/74/picopsu-77674117.html says First Use In Commerce Date 2005-12-19. They were shown to the wider public at the 2006 CES https://www.bit-tech.net/news/hardware/2006/01/07/pico_psu/1

I would go with 2005 December 19 based on the trademark date.

This 2006 May http://www.silentpcreview.com/article601-page1.html test says "A year ago, Mini-box introduced a product called the PW-200M, which is more or less the same thing in a bulkier package and still available." -- ie surely the PicoPSU was not done yet otherwise why release the larger product at all.
