The soft modded WiiU (vWii mode, haven't gotten around to fiddling w/ the other side yet) has eaten the last two HDD's that I've hung off it. As best as I can tell its not all that gentle w/ the drive at power up and has a tendency to just outright drop power to it when its done (leaving vWii mode for example). Solution... try an SSD. External SSD's are ludicrously expensive and I really dont need all the performance so I grabbed the cheapest SSD on New Egg that wasn't utter garbage and a cheap Orico USB case. Will hang it off the WiiU tonight and see how things go. I'm hoping the lack of mechanical parts will result in it being much more tolerant to the vWii's abusive DIY USB stack.
