I think that tactically it was a compromise. Strategically, I think they're hoping to have a number of advantages spring out of bringing the technology to market much earlier - from maturation to manufacturing to architecture - but it will take time for any benefits ascribed from that to be realized on a balance sheet. Plus, to your point, nVidia has probably surprised them a bit with how much they've achieved with GDDR.


In any case, it seems that everyone in the GPU and CPU realms is surprising the other, and that's a good thing. Means nobody can drag heels and everyone has to meaningfully press for the best possible improvements now.
