Hi,

I'm facing a very weird problem with Dell 330W Brick.
I ordered a "genuine" brick from a chinese seller on eBay which turned out to be a fake one (no kidding!) :

In fact this is a 230W power supply by Delta Electronics with some crappy PCB and components.. During heavy graphics games, like BF1 at Ultra settings or BF5, the computer randomly shut down sometimes, and the light from the brick fade out.
So i ordered this time a genuine dell brick, from their website. I received it today, and my problem is now even worse : i can't even get into a game, do a graphic benchmark, the computer and the original dell brick shutdown (same thing: the led from the brick fade out).

No doubt the brick seems new, and genuine.
I don't know what to do.. this brick was really expensive, and work less than the fake replica!
I've read that HDPlex new jack revision is having an issue, by leaving the sense pin disconnect instead of connecting it to the ground. Maybe the china replica connect the Sense pin to ground on the brick's PCB ?

Waiting for your help (or advice) and thanking you in advance,
Alvita.

I FOUND THE PROBLEM

I opened the Dell original brick, and it has a "ID" wire connected to a chip.
I did the experiment to connect it to ground, and it was a success.

(This is a very unsafe way to do this, yes..)

Two video with intensive CPU and GPU benchmark at the same time using PowerMAX :

With the fix
Without the fix

The next step is to securely solder the two trace together.
It's very weird that HDPlex was not aware of this ! A lot of customer are probably disappointed since this dell power supply is very common.
Hope this thread is usefull for some people.

P.S : i bought the HDPLEX 400W under version 2.1 Sept 2019

You should email Larry at HDPlex, he is very responsive and could give you more information as to why or if this is a mistake.

hey interesting post.. so what exactly is this MOD that is done to the genuine DELL 330W power brick? What does it do, why is it needed, and to what extent does it measurably improve performance of the brick?

What is OP's CPU?
I own a HDPlex 400W 1.0 and a second-hand Dell 330W.
I used to use it on:
1) E5-1620v4 + X99
2) i7-8700 + Z370
3) i7-9700K + Z390
The power shutted down on i7-9700K + Z390 + Prime95 Small FFTs.
But it never had this problem on i7-8700 and E5 v4.
I think it's a problem that either HDPlex 400W or Dell 330W will overload when i7-9700K's high peak current happens in a very short time.

Not only i7-9700K breaks HDPlex 400W + Dell 330W, but also i7-9700T breaks Abee DC-ATX board / Gigabyte IMB310TN (Thin-ITX M/B's DC input) + FSP 84W.
On latter, when I change the brick from FSP 84W to FSP 150W, i7-9700T never auto-shutdown anymore.

I also tested the continuous power consume on Z390 motherboard.
(9700T @ Z390 = 8C8T 3.6GHz forever, no TDP limit, no frequency down)
It's about 67 watts in total.
So how can a 84W brick make a 67W CPU shutdown?
Peak current.
