Hi! I am looking to build a budget SFF or mATX (micro ATX) PC. (yeah, I am using a 2019 Intel MacBook Pro 16inch 32 GB RAM, and it's NOT good (it gets hot, and fans run when my crontab runs (it’s just checking if my battery is <20% and if so it turns another pm2 process off 😭))).

I got the RAM, SSD, monitor (Dell s34dwg) (not included cuz a family member is gifting me them), case (Montec Air 100), and MOBO (motherboard, ASRock b650m pro rs wifi). Right now, it’s at $1554 (I manually calculated the prices with taxes and used deals). My budget is $800, but if the parts look future-proof and robust, then I could fit in $200 ($1k). If there are cheaper alternatives with similar performance (e.g., CPU, GPU), then please tell me! :)

PC Building Context:

I built a PC for my brother in 2023, fixed my sister’s laptop (it went black) and other misc things she asked me to fix, fixed my 10 yr old PC (it beeped and went black) multiple times, and revived my parent’s OLD PC. I also fixed my brother’s wifi adapter. Also some other things i cant remember but that’s a little of me. Making this PC compatible with linux would also be great. (i heard linux is picky about hardware…)

As the other friend suggested, any LianLi or cooler master SFX case might be good. Else if you want something premium looking like a MacBook quality, I used to have Ghost S1 of Formd T1.
Kind of promotion, but I am still selling ghost S1 MK3 if you want to take a look ;).

Linux is NOT picky about hardware, its just the other way around: Hardware manufacturers are picky about releasing details about their products, hindering repairability. So a lot of things have to be reverse engineered, and thus, some hardware - esp. where the manufacturer is extremely unwilling to help - has worse support than on Windoze.

For now, your setup looks rather solid. GPU should be a non-issue, as AMD is supposed to be very reliable, also there is a native FOSS driver for AMD GPUs, which allows for quicker setup and installation, vs. having to install the proprietary drivers with Nvidia GPUs.

If you really want to go SFF, ie. below or at max around 20L, then for a budget case with your current setup I'd suggest one of these:

- MC-Elite aka Acer U320 - thats a 15 - 17ish L case, with ATX PSU support, too
- Jonsbo C6 Max - its 20ish L case, recently released, that extends the front of the pre-existing C6 to allow for larger GPUs and big CPU coolers (up to 170 mm); most importantly, the top-mounted PSU can get fresh air from the front
- Jonsbo Z20 - another 20ish L case, with focus on the looks

I would list more, but with the current tariff insecurities et all IDK how good or bad availability for other cases is.

My personal non-SFF sized case is the Asus Prime AP201, which is extremely versatile, theoretically allows for a GPU length of up to 450 mm, and also it just isnt the A3 :D
