Okay, for $800 you get...
  • 3.6GHz quad‑core 8th‑generation Intel Core i3 (+$300 for a 3.2GHz i7)
  • 8GB 2666MHz DDR4 (+$200/$600/$1400 for 16GB/32GB/64GB)
  • Intel UHD Graphics 630
  • 128GB SSD storage (+$200/$400/$800/$1600 for 256GB/512GB/1TB/2TB)
  • Gigabit Ethernet (+$100 for 10Gbps)
For $1100 you get...
  • 3.0GHz 6‑core 8th‑generation Intel Core i5 (+$200 for a 3.2GHz i7)
  • 8GB 2666MHz DDR4 (+$200/$600/$1400 for 16GB/32GB/64GB)
  • Intel UHD Graphics 630
  • 256GB SSD storage (+$200/$600/$1400 for 512GB/1TB/2TB)
  • Gigabit Ethernet (+$100 for 10Gbps)

So, basically, you get an i5 and an extra 128GB of storage for the extra $300 between the two models.

Additional tech specs here: https://www.apple.com/mac-mini/specs/

They're sexy little things, but too little too late for me, since I gave up waiting for a true successor to my 2011 BTO Mac mini (that benchmarked about as good as the 2014 models) and finally just built my own SFF PC. Also, with all the shots they were firing at Intel (e.g. the new iPad Pro is more powerful than 92% of mobile PCs sold in the last year, including Intel i7 models) and Microsoft (e.g. the new iPad Pro has graphics that match those of an Xbox One S in a device that's 90% smaller) today, I wouldn't be surprised if this is the last Mac mini to feature Intel chips.

Oh, also of note, the RAM is once again user upgradeable instead of being soldered in, so you don't have to pay Apple's obscene markup on DIMMs. I'd wager the SSD is user upgradeable as well and that iFixit will have a guide posted for doing so within the month, but having done so before in my 2011 Mac mini, it's definitely a precision operation that is not for the average user.

Same, except hers was a 2009.

So happy i didn't wait to replace my GFs aging mac with this Mini. The similar spec (not including the size and Thunderbolt) i3 8100 Chopin i built her would be exactly twice the price in Mac Mini format.

Standby for QC i7 2012 mac mini prices to plummet on eBay.

I have had a hard look at my computer usage over the last couple of months. I don't use a single item outside the browser, except for Eve Online. With the USB-C out and an external monitor, I am genuinely thinking if I could use an iPad Pro.

Will be curious to see where the new Mac Mini lands in the performance per liter scale. Am I right in assuming the top spec tier uses an i7-8700?

At 1.4L is this one of the smallest (if not the smallest) 65W desktop-class CPU and internal PSU available?
I/O is certainly top notch and hard to replicate...4 tb3 AND 10G...

I'm disappointed as this is little more than a different color annodizing with much needed hardware upgrades. The price increases for RAM and memory are absurd and the 10G option should be standard if they'll need another 4 years for a potential refresh. The fact that it has replaceable RAM is nice and the ports are serviceable but I'll be waiting for the benchmark results, expecting it to overheat easily or be loud to sustain boost.

Apple is encouraging people to stack several of them so heat management could actually be decent when using just one..

wow, thats' a touch 'apple tax' this generation.

you can build out a deskmini 310 (minus TB ports) specs the same for ~$350. vs. $799 for apple.

:(

Does this use an external brick?

I would get one, but an STX pc is slightly bigger and more powerful.

Every model since 2010 sported an internal fanless PSU with figure-of-8 IEC C8 connector. No brick.

This is the first Mini with desktop (65W) CPUs and it’s rated for 150W max power draw.

Makes it slightly tempting, but as stated earlier, NOT cost effective.

Size is pretty nice.

We can already hit these performance/liter wit STX parts but what makes this really nice is the IO. Look at all that love for USB C.

Meanwhile their phones use Lightning still. Rip.
