What I found especially interesting is that an nVidia engineer commented that they did actually test the connector rigorously with the manufacturer:

So either QA (nVidia and cable manufacturer) is not doing its job, they are shipping a different product that was tested (higher power draw or different cable assembly) or the driver is different than the ones used during testing.
