Hey all,

I have a 6950x running stock clocks under an NH-L12 In a Ghost S1. I was wondering if upgrading/sidegrading to a new Ryzen 3800x or 3900x. I don't do any intense processing and do some light video gaming. I probably wouldn't even overclock it just to keep it cool. I know that performance numbers aren't out yet (outside of AMD's reveal stats). Should I sell my cpu and mobo in favor of AMD's new setup? I doubt that the performance will take a hit playing 2560x1440.

Keeping it is also very much an option. It's less than 1.5 years old.

It looks like someone who likes to waste money. In your shoes, I'd go straight for that 3900X.

I mean, I got the 6950x from a professor who used it for less than a year. Only paid $400. I'm not too sure what you value pc components but I certainly don't think that was a waste of money.

Thanks for the response though. I do want to jump to a newer system.

When you upgrade, I’ll buy that proc from you. I had been prowling hardwareswap for a few months but hadn’t had too much luck.

Edit: I have a rampage v edition 10 mobo with Monoblock and a 6850k i’d like to upgrade.

So on user benchmark, the 2700x beats the 6950x in their "gaming" and "desktop" scores, and only loses slightly in the "workstation" category.

Get a 3700x ($329 USD) or maybe the 3800x ($399 USD), both will (still not proven but should) out perform your 6950x in gaming at 1440p and may even win in "workstation" tasks. Wait for day one reveiws, Gamers Nexus and Hardware Unboxed should have some pretty comprehensive day one coverage.

For any of the new Ryzen processors, to get the lowest latency use 3600 mhz memory.

Given AMD's 15% IPC gains and bumped clock speeds I'd suggest the 3700x/3800x with an x570 board, iirc Buildzoid did a vrm breakdown of gigabyte's mITX x570 and said it had a pretty good setup that should be capable of handling even the 3950x without putting out excessive heat.

Id lean to the 3700x as its a 65w TDP part which should mean it will stay very cool and shouldn't throttle(its also cheaper). The 3800x is a 105w part and I dont see the mild clock increase making a huge difference especially if the it has to throttle.

Or if you just want a crazy rig, the 3900x or 3950x would always be cool.
