You're now just blue-balling everyone for a threadripper ITX board now, ASRock!!!

EDIT: okay I shouldn't be tooting my own horn, but are those... horizontal RAM socket placements on the underside? o_o

hahahahha I'll stop. looks damned ridiculous LOL

Yep, they've done it.

Quote : "When the Intel Xeon LGA-3647 series processors only appeared, many experts joked that this processor socket is so large that the mini-iTX format Board on it can not be done. And behold ASRock Rack showed the world that anything is possible, and if you need Scalable Xeon Board for nettop - please, the company has for your motherboard EPC621D4I-2M."

(Mods - Could someone merge the conversation together? This is spread across 3 threads. I'm going to post in this one seeing as its older.)

I think someone on that twitter thread described it best with the Jeff Goldblum quote. Anyway, one of the first SFF ideas I had in my mind was a build with this boards predecessor, C422 WSI/IPMI because I wanted 64gb RAM and ECC at the time, (I still want 64GB, now hedging my bets Ryzen 3 brings 128GB). The biggest roadblocks I ran into was the lack of USB's, lack of Wifi/Bluetooth, lack of soundcard/chip, overall cost, the fact the board did not support 16GB ECC sticks and the temps.

Here was what I came up with at the time (December 2018).

CPU
Intel 6 Core Xeon W-2135
CPU Cooler
Dynatron T318 1U LGA 2011
Motherboard
C422 WSI/IPMI
Wireless USB
ASUS USB-AC53 NANO Wi-Fi
Bluetooth USB
ASUS USB-BT400 Bluetooth 4.0
Ram
Crucial 16GB CT16G4TFD8266
Case
Dan A4 SFX
PSU
Corsair SF600 Platinum
GPU
NVIDIA Quadro RTX 4000
Boot Drive
Samsung 970 PRO 512 GB
Active Drive
Samsung 970 PRO 1 TB
Active Drive Adapter
StarTech.com M.2 to U.2 Adapter
Scratch Drive
Samsung 860 EVO 500GB mSATA
Scratch Drive Adapter
SAT32MSATPEX
U.2 Cable
CBL-SAST-0956
92mm Fans
Noctua NF-A9x14 PWM x 2
USB C to A cable
USB 3.1 Front Panel Header to USB 3.0 20 Pin
Internal USB
BQLZR 9-Pin to 2 USB 2.0 A

That came to nearly £3916.88 or $5152.22 USD (As of today). Nowdays I prefer to aim around the £2000 mark.

I think if anyone wants this to work in an SFF format, we are going to need a bespoke case made. I imagine it would be like a wind tunnel a bit like the CaseLabs Bullet BH4 crossed with a server case. The sub-70 TR4/SP3 cooler thread has taught me we are going to need something special for HEDT/Server CPU's.

And if anyone wants to attempt doing a slim case here are some Supermicro coolers and the Dyantron B1, B3, B4, B5, B8, B11, B16, B18 and B21.

Plus here's a list of CPU's on Scan.

Good hunting.

Do you mean the M.2 PCIe slots?
no I mean these two markers

eh I think you @Supercluster might want to add to the thread title ._. maybe a few others missed this thread because the title doesn't describe it

I merged the topics and the posts in the X299 thread.

This board is all kinds of weird. I'm sad it only has 1GbE as 10GbE shouldn't have been a problem. The tall M.2 sockets on the reverse side also demand case support to be investigated. Though I ponder how much space you are saving when 205W TDP CPUs are supported on such a small board.

Hats off to ASRock for once again raising the bar on board realestate efficiency !

I can only assume they're going to officially drop this at computex ._. as the little monster's Xeon cousin

Eh, I would say if you really wanted to use this board, go big or go home. 10-18 cores would make more sense on the X299 platform unless you really want ECC as there are more features and better cooled components on the X299 itx board. 20 cores and beyond is where this board starts to really shine.

This looks rather interesting, but that m.2 height is really bothering me.

I'm not worthy.... ?‍♂️

We used to joke about this, I really didn't think it was possible. Honestly, the socket looks smaller on the board than I thought it would be, I thought it would take up half an ITX board, but this board looks less crammed than the consumer X299. I guess when you strip it down of all extras, you get a lot of space back.

Honestly, if they just get rid of the VGA port and give it 2 more USB 3, one USB 2 header, 1 more SATA and a black PCB, it's basically ready for the prosumer space. You can get a DAC for audio and an external WiFi if you need it, and 2 M.2 is enough. I don't know if Intel will release consumer chips on this socket, but it's safe to say if they do, ASRock will have a consumer ITX board ready.

I would love to see this board in an S4 Mini or even a Velka 3, it would be hilarious. I hope Linus does a build with it in the A4-SFX for his next ultimate compact PC.

now that this board is being shown around, a lot of people completely turned around on their opinion for a TR4 ITX board ._.
at least there'd be a lot more people to talk with now
