I've been a small form factor enthusiast ever 2005, when I asked my parents for a GAME BOY micro for my 9th birthday instead of a Nintendo DS. Since then, I've become a huge proponent of retrofitting laptops with external graphics (by ANY MEANS NECESSARY), software cross-platform compatibility, and voiding warranties. Today's computers are borderline magic, no matter the platform you choose or the specs it packs, so my philosophy is to make the most use out of what you have available rather than spend to get extra features.
