It is funny how still nowadays connectors allow for wrong polarity connections. I thought that was a thing of the past... fuses are not that common any more; the power supply most likely has one. Probably that is the only one. Will you consider going air cooling for the CPU?

Did you find out what caused the burnt rubber smell? Some tube got damaged?

Possibly some good news. Measuring the pictures from Sapphire website it seems that the measures on the specs are the maximum dimensions of the card. So those seem to include the bracket and the PCIE connector. So if the bracket is not counted in the case maximum size of the GPU you may save...
