SFF Forum hits version 2.0: New look and features!

Alongside the launch of SFF Network, we’re excited to also announce a bunch of changes and new features that have been added to our existing community, SFF Forum. We’ve been working on these updates for some time, and couldn’t be happier with how well SFN 2.0 has turned out! To be honest, that there are just too many changes, big and small, to summarize in a single article, and your best bet to learn about about everything new is to simply use the forum for a while. But I’d like to mention some of more substantive changes we’ve made, for today’s reveal, just so you …

Moore’s Law Buckles as Intel’s Tick-Tock Cycle Slows Down

Techpowerup is reporting that Moore’s law – that the number of transistors per square inch on integrated circuits had doubled every year since the integrated circuit was invented – may have come to an end. After being accurate for many years in CPU architecture, problems with the 10nm and smaller nodes becoming incredibly challenging. Intel’s Broadwell platform launched later than expected, late enough for Intel to launch a Haswell refresh. In order to progress to faster, more powerful processors, the designers will have to start looking at smarter and more creative was to use the transistors to improve performance. SilverStone announces the Milo ML06-E

SilverStone has just announced an updated version of the Milo ML06 HTPC chassis. The main change is moving the SFX PSU to the other side of the Mini-ITX motherboard to allow for a dual-slot low-profile expansion card. There are a few versions of the GTX 750Ti available in that form factor but for now that’s about the most GPU power you can get in a low-profile card. But as AMD has shown with the Fury X, moving to HBM allows for much more compact PCB sizes so hopefully in the future we’ll see a proliferation of powerful low-profile video cards to get …

Microsoft to host “fan celebrations” for July 29’s Windows 10 release

If you were looking for a reason to party a little over two weeks from now, you’re in luck: In keeping with similar efforts for previous releases of Windows, Microsoft has announced that they’ll be hosting “fan celebrations” of the arrival of Windows 10, with the help of retailers, and (of course) their own Microsoft stores. Events run by Microsoft will be held in 13 cities around the world on launch day, including Sydney, Tokyo, Singapore, Beijing, New Delhi, Dubai, Nairobi, Berlin, Johannesburg, Madrid, London, Sao Paolo, and New York City. Microsoft has indicated that these celebrations will offer “hands-on opportunities, experiential …

EVGA K|NGP|N Edition GTX 980 Ti teased

Normally, I’ve been quick to dismiss EVGA’s K|NGP|N editions of flagship graphics as little more than overpriced hardware, complete with frivolous features and stats-happy marketing buzz to match. After all, most of the features provided by these cards are, plainly put, total overkill for the vast majority of system builders, only becoming useful in exotic scenarios like LN2 cooling. (The fact that these cards have tended to look pretty boring doesn’t help much, either.) I have to change my tune, though, and make an exception for the recently revealed K|NGP|N GTX 980 Ti, if not for one simple reason: It’s gorgeous. Of course, as has been the …

CrossFire Fury X’s compared to SLI 980 Ti’s in dual and triple-GPU showdown

Over on PCPer, Ryan Shrout has just published a video and blog post detailing a fairly rigorous performance test, that pits AMD and nVidia’s flagship cards – the Radeon Fury X and GTX 980Ti, respectively – against each other in dual-GPU and triple-GPU configurations. In combination with the single-GPU testing they’ve already performed on both flagships, the analysis also helps to uncover how efficiently performance scales when utilizing multiple graphics cards. That’s actually quite important, since in the past, such scaling has traditionally tended to be inconsistent, and highly dependent on the proper implementation of drivers and other tuning. Frame variance, in …

IBM unveils world’s first functional 7nm chip

When it comes to chip fabrication and emergent process nodes for silicon, Intel is almost always the company on the forefront of people’s minds: as the largest player in the semiconductor space, their tick-tock microarchitectural change model has set the pace in which ever-smaller transistor sizes are adopted by industry. It came as a bit of a surprise, then, when IBM (of all companies) announced today that they’ve just leapfrogged Intel, by developing a lab-tested process that can yield 7nm chips. In fact, through a partnership with GlobalFoundries and Samsung, IBM has actually managed to claim a lot of important ‘firsts’ with …

Logitech rebrands, launches Logi label

Perhaps one of the largest manufacturers of computer accessories and peripherals, Logitech today announced a full rebrand of the company, replete with a new logo and some bright and bold styling. They’ve also announced a new label, Logi, for some of their “newest product categories”, which the (potentially seizure-inducing) video below suggests will include wireless keyboards, tablet cases, and the like: Logitech explained the rebrand in a little more detail on their company blog, saying: While our commitment to excellence in peripherals hasn’t changed, we’re dedicating focus on design, hiring our first-ever chief design officer, Alastair Curtis, and delivering products that create amazing …
