Noctua releases the slim 120mm NF-A12x15 fan

Noctua first showed off a prototype slim 120mm fan at Computex 2014, and at each Computex since they’ve shown off iterations of the design, but not this year. This year, Noctua has instead officially announced the fan, now designated the NF-A12x15 PWM and NF-A12x15 FLX (for the PWM and voltage-controlled variants respectively). So instead of prototypes, we will be taking a look at production versions of the fan at Computex this year, in person! 120 x 15mm fans are nothing new, but the reason I’ve been especially looking forward to Noctua’s take on the form factor is their SSO2 bearings (a modified FDB). All the …

HDPLEX 160W DC-ATX direct-plug review

Up for review today is the HDPLEX 160W DC-ATX, a power supply of sorts, but one that is a bit different than the SFX and SFX-L PSUs I have previously reviewed. What makes a DC-ATX unit different? It is right in the name, it takes a single DC input voltage and from that generates the various voltages needed by a typical ATX-spec motherboard: 12V, 5V, 5VSB, 3.3V, -12V, and the power good signal. That’s all it does though, so some sort of adapter to take AC power from the wall outlet and convert it to that DC input voltage is required to complete the …

GALAX GTX 1070 KATANA single-slot in stock!

GALAX showed off a single-slot GTX 1070 late last year, but unlike their vaporware single-slot designs from previous GPU generations, this one has actually become reality and is now in stock on GALAX’s web store! The specs on this card are pretty impressive considering the form factor. Despite the smaller heatsink and thinner blower fan compared to normal double-slot thickness cards, the KATANA still ships in a slightly overclocked configuration, with a base clock of 1518MHz and a boost clock of boost clock 1708MHz. The cooling solution looks about as robust as it can get in the limited space available, …

SAPPHIRE Pulse Radeon RX 570 ITX launched

AMD has refreshed their GPU lineup with the Radeon RX 500-series, consisting mainly of clockspeed bumps (and attendant power consumption increases unfortunately) but one nice surprise is the appearance of a short RX 570 card in the form of the SAPPHIRE Pulse Radeon RX 570 ITX. This is a welcome development for Polaris for SFF builds, since neither the RX 470 or RX 480s were available in a SFF-friendly form factor from any of the AIBs despite the small size of the reference RX 470 PCB. Specs are standard for a RX 570: 4GB of 7Gb/s GDDR5, boost clock of 1244MHz, …

SFF shopping in Akihabara

As I’ve mentioned planning a few times in the podcast, I’m currently in Tokyo! And of course I had to visit Akihabara, the electronics capital of Japan to see what kind of retail presence SFF has in this country that’s perpetually short on space. Akihabara (also known as Electric Town) is an area to the west of Akihabara Station in Central Tokyo, just north-east of the Imperial Palace. It’s a hub of geek culture, with many stores and venues promoting video games, anime, manga, and PC hardware. Within a 10-minute walking distance of the station exits are a dozen larger stores …
