SPCR reviews the ASUS Maximus VIII Impact

The silence savants over at SPCR have reviewed the ASUS Maximus VIII Impact motherboard: The Asus Maximus VIII Impact is the most capable and feature-packed mini-ITX motherboard I’ve ever seen. Aside from the usual features provided courtesy of the Z170 chipset, the Impact is outfitted with a high-end audio solution, a proficient wireless module/antenna, a premium power regulation system, a U.2 port, up to five independently controllable fan headers via the included fan card, and an external temperature sensor that can be placed anywhere in the case. They’ve even crammed in physical power, reset, clear CMOS, and BIOS Flashback buttons, …

ASUS announces the ROG Maximus VIII Impact

Today, ASUS is officially showing off the new ROG Maximus VIII Impact, their enthusiast Mini-ITX offering for the Z170 platform. Some of the highlights of the new model include updated aesthetics to match the other Z170 ROG boards, 802.11ac 2×2 WiFi, USB 3.1 in type-A and C, a PCIe 3.0 x4 “U.2” connector, SupremeFX Impact III audio card with a nice-looking shield, 2x DDR4 slots, and an included fan extension card for 3 extra fan headers. Samsung announces the 950 Pro, a consumer M.2 SSD with NVMe and V-NAND

Samsung’s SSD Global Summit is currently happening in Seoul, Korea and the big announcement is the upcoming release of the Samsung 950 Pro SSD. AnandTech has a great overview of the new features. It is the first consumer SSD in the M.2 form factor to feature the NVMe interface combined with 3D NAND. It will initially release in 256GB and 512GB models, with a 1TB model coming early 2016. Performance is on par with the OEM SM951, with the 512GB 950 Pro rated at 2500MB/s read and 1500MB/s write for sequential. The 256GB comes in a little slower, at 2200MB/s and …

SilverStone releases the TD02-Slim and TD03-Slim

SilverStone is launching two SFF-oriented water cooling solutions, the TD02-Slim (240mm) and the TD03-Slim (120mm). By combining slim 22mm thick radiators with 120mm x 15mm fans, they are able to deliver a liquid cooling system that’s only 37mm thick for rad+fan. Presumably with the decreased radiator surface area and slim fans the performance won’t be quite as good as normal CLC’s, but the slim profile could make it feasible to fit water cooling in cases that weren’t suited to it before. I’m thinking this is aimed at slim cases like the ML07. The block appears to be identical to the TD02-Lite and …

CRYORIG Announces the C7 low-profile heatsink

CRYORIG has officially announced the super compact C7 heatsink. Coming in at just 47mm tall, it is only 2mm taller than the stock Intel heatsink but CRYORIG is claiming up to 25% better cooling performance while staying 20% quieter. The compact dimensions are designed to stay within both the Intel and AMD keep-out zones so it should not interfere at all with RAM slots, PCIe slots, VRM heatsinks, etc. I’m not a big fan (pun completely intended) of the proprietary fan though. It seems like a nice quality fan but things fail and attaching a standard 92mm fan will be tricky. …

AMD announces the Radeon R9 Nano video card

AMD is betting big on SFF with today’s announcement of the Radeon R9 Nano. Contrary to earlier rumors, the Nano is not a cut-down Fury X but instead features the same full complement of stream processors, ROPs, and RAM, but at a lower clockspeed and thus TDP, all wrapped up in a air-cooled SFF package. HardOCP has a great run-down of AMD’s press release, the main highlights are the 6″ (150mm) length, 175W TDP, and 1000MHz clockspeed (“up to”). The 175W TDP is a whopping 100W reduction from the Fury X but getting there ties in closely with the disclaimer on the …
